Two Trees
Five Songs for Voice and Piano
PROGRAM NOTE
Soprano Erin Morley inspired most of my vocal music composed in 2001. I composed four of these five songs for her and added an earlier song, Iron Clouds (written for Nicole Cabell.)
TEXT
1. Two Trees
There are two trees in a lonely field
They breathe a spell to me
A dreary thought their dark boughs yield
All waving solemnly
2. Paranoia
Woods you need not frown on me
Spectral trees that so dolefully
Shake your heads in the dreary sky
You need not mock so bitterly
3. Iron Clouds
Still as she looked the iron clouds
Would part and sunlight shown between
But drearily strange and pale and cold
4. Night Song
O come with me thus ran the song
The moon is bright in Autumn’s sky
And thou hast toiled and laboured long
With aching head and weary eye
5. Grey Skies
Lonely at her window sitting
While the evening stole away
Fitful winds foreboding flitting
Through a sky of cloudy grey
