PROGRAM NOTE

David Liptak, my second teacher at Eastman, suggested I write a multi-movement work for my own instrument basing each movement on a different compositional conceit. The first piece is based on a single motive, the second piece is a toccata using only seven notes and the third piece is a study in double stops. As I finished the work my high school viola teacher, Clyn Barrus, the head of the Music Department at Brigham Young University and former principal violist of the Wiener Symphoniker and Minnesota Orchestra passed away. It is dedicated to his memory.
