PROGRAM NOTE

When I set out to write my third quartet I began thinking of ascending and descending lines.

I imagined each movement to be a canvas within a larger cycle of paintings like Monet’s cathedrals, Cézanne’s Mont Sainte-Victoire series or Gerhardt Richter’s abstract cycles.

Each movement or panel is a new realization of the original, nebulous impetus: descent and ascent.
