PROGRAM NOTE

“And Jesus wept” is the shortest verse of scripture. It is taken from the Gospel of John who tells of Christ weeping with his friends, Mary and Martha for the death of their brother, Lazarus, who he will shortly raise from the dead.

As in the entire Cantiones sacrae, the subject is tears and I have set the word “weep” to two extended, so-spi-ro, melismatic, simple chord progressions.
