Paradise Saved (another version of the Fall)
Adam, indignant, would not eat with Eve,
They say, and she was driven from his side.
Watching the gates close on her tears, his pride
Upheld him, though he could not help but grieve
And climbed the wall, because his loneliness
Pined for her lonely figure in the dust:
Lo, there were two! God who is more than just
Sent her a helpmeet in that wilderness.
Day after day he watched them in the waste
Grow old, breaking the harsh unfriendly ground,
Bearing their children, till at last they died;
While Adam, whose fellow God had not replaced,
Lived on immortal, young, with virtue crowned,
Sterile and impotent and justified.

The Academy—a program of Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, and the Weill Music Institute in partnership with the New York City Department of Education—is a two-year fellowship program for the finest young professional musicians designed to develop the artistic values and skills necessary for careers that combine musical excellence with education, community engagement, advocacy, and leadership. The program provides ongoing professional development and opportunities to perform and teach in concert halls, public schools, college campuses, and throughout local communities. The program reflects the belief that today’s artists require both the ability to perform at the highest level and the capacity to give back to the community, inspiring the next generation of quality musicians and music lovers. Ensemble ACJW—the performing arm of The Academy—comes together in different sizes, having the opportunity to play intimate chamber music as well as larger, conducted chamber orchestra works. A partnership with Skidmore College that began in the 2007–2008 season also brings performances and educational events to the Saratoga Springs community.
The Academy was launched in January 2007, initiated by Carnegie Hall’s Executive and Artistic Director Clive Gillinson in partnership with Joseph W. Polisi, President of The Juilliard School. The fellows in the program were selected because of their extraordinary level of musicianship, deep commitment to education and community engagement, and leadership qualities. Fellows are graduates of leading music schools, including The Curtis Institute of Music, Eastman School of Music, The Juilliard School, Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, Mannes College The New School for Music, New England Conservatory, and Yale School of Music. Hailed a “superb ensemble” by New Music Connoisseur, New York-based Sospiro Winds has established itself as an exciting new force on the chamber music scene. Originally formed in 2004, the ensemble began performing while at the Yale School of Music. Since then, Sospiro has continued its efforts to bring the wind quintet repertoire to many varied audiences throughout the United States. This season, Sospiro joins the roster of Musical Connections, a pilot program of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Institute of Music. The ensemble won the Silver Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition in 2007 and was a finalist in the 2008 Osaka International Chamber Music Competition. Announced as winners of the Yale Chamber Music Competion in 2006, Sospiro performed on the Chamber Music Society at Yale Concert Series. Sospiro has been heard on WSHU performing new music by Nicholas Skedgell; the group has also worked with members of the Moran Wind Quintet and the Chiara String Quartet and performed at the Chamber Music Institute in Lincoln, Nebraska.
Interested in promoting new repertoire for the wind quintet, the ensemble has premiered new works by Lembit Beecher, James Borchers, and Donald Hagar. Founded in 1992, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble communicates with audiences through inspiring performances of new and old chamber music. By embracing both musics, we enrich the audience’s experience — we reawaken a feeling of immediacy in performances of familiar masterpieces and we reveal the powerful expressive intentions in the music of our time. The ensemble’s twelve musicians, many of whom have played together since the 1980s, perform in different combinations, using strings, winds, guitar and piano to present a wide range of repertoire.
